South and Central America

From Your Regional Leadership

Within South and Central America is emerging a mountain of interest, vast as the Andean cordillera, for translational research. Scientists are bringing their contribution to our regional “knowledge economy”, through research projects filled with enthusiasm for cell therapy approaches. This potential can be nurtured further through the support of scientific societies such as ISCT. This interaction can do with the cell therapy field in our continent what spring does with the cherry trees (Pablo Neruda, Chilean poet and Nobel prize recipient).

Quoting Nobel laureates from the SCA region is a way to understand the three ISCT pillars of value (Academia, Regulatory and Quality/Operations, and Commercialization) as well as the Society’s slogan “Connect, Communicate, Translate."

In a plea to highlight the importance of education and communication of knowledge, Baruj Benacerraf, the Venezuelan recipient of the Nobel prize in Medicine, mentioned: “...when I started to teach research fellows and students, I realized that the training of young scientists was one of my most valuable and rewarding experiences. Later I chose “The Training of Scientists” as the topic of my presidential address to The American Association of Immunologists.

Bernardo Houssay the recipient of the Nobel prize from Argentina, stated that “science is not expensive, expensive is the ignorance”. Therefore, it is very important to overcome the limitation of funding and lack of support and create a working force based on scientific collaboration and share of knowledge.

About the relevance of scientific activism and the interaction between peers, Cesar Milstein, another Argentinian Nobel laureate in Medicine confessed the following: “… I wasn't a particularly brilliant student, but on the other hand, I was very active in Student Union affairs and in student politics”.

Mario Molina, (Nobel prize in Chemistry) from Mexico declared “… the planet is just too small for these developing countries to repeat the economic growth in the same way that the rich countries have done it in the past. We don't have enough natural resources. Clearly, something has to change.”  Maybe it is time to create value from the knowledge generated in our countries that can be translated to effective but also affordable therapies.

The ISCT Annual Meeting and other activities that are being organized in the region will create not only a forum to exchange ideas and learn about new scientific breakthroughs but also the vivid opportunity to make new friendships in an enjoyable environment as “no medicine cures what happiness cannot”― Gabriel García Márquez (Nobel laureate, Colombia).

Join ISCT today and become part of a truly global community advancing cell and gene therapy.
